Rapid Recovery

In human terms, the fifty-years-distant eruption of the Kilauea Iki vent seems like a lifetime. The magnitude of the event, and of the entire volcanic system, becomes obvious when you see the scrubby plantlife barely managing to survive, even after that long stretch. This is a region that can, nearby rainforests prove, support lush green vegetation. But when the whole place has been paved over with a hundred feet of crystalline rock, a few meager bushes represent an impressive comeback.
